Day 3: Futsal (and Lectures)
(10/3) Hi folks! It's Clare again, this time with an Olympic update! But first...
Today was our last full day of lectures! Our professor shared the history, largely political, of modern Egypt. We began with the French invasion in the early 19th century and worked our way through the current president, el-Sisi. Over the past couple hundred years, Egypt has been invaded several times, and the composition of the government has often varied in name and structure. It was hard to keep up at times, but we all appreciated getting to know modern Egypt better. We learn so much about Ancient Egypt in the U.S. that I think at times modern Egypt can be lost. As we continue to see, Egypt is so much more than its pyramids - which many Cairo residents haven't visited, or its temples. While we've enjoyed our lectures in their variety and wealth of information, 6 hours of lecture can be a lot.
Now for FUTSAL (echo/fade out). All teams played valiantly. People were hit. Goals were scored - and missed. People ran. Sweats were broken. Dreams were crushed. BUT, fun was had by all, proven by the laughing, smiles and fantastic sportsmanship. *drum roll* The results were: Canada and Egypt tied for first with records of 3:1, Madagascar close behind at 2:2, Vatican City 1:3 and Norway 0:4. Next up will be trivia. Stay tuned!
We all went our separate ways for dinner, but many reconvened for a night at Air Zone - a trampoline park. While some jumped for joy for a glorious 45 minutes, others enjoyed pizza and a movie back at the apartments. The bouncers finished off the night with delicious chocolate pots, smoothies, brownies and crepes.
Stay tuned for tomorrow's events!
