DAY 2: Track and Field
Hi folks! I’m your host Anna, and welcome back to the 2nd day of events for the first Global Olympiad, the only one that has truly mattered in any history. Before the much-anticipated track events, we had Professor Ripley’s class in one of the apartments, where we continued to discuss the role of Jesus Christ in Islam, and how interfaith dialogue has addressed religious differences in the past. We also took some time as a group to collectively process the last month (!!) of traveling together, which received rave reviews such as “this month has flown by,” “I am so grateful for all of you,” and “I’m sleep-deprived and the plague nearly took me, but I’m glad I’m doing this.” It’s safe to say that it hasn’t all been rainbows and the Great Pyramids, and we’re all feeling the benefit of traveling in a group because of times like these to vent and talk through the challenges.
SPEAKING OF CHALLENGES…
The sun was glaring. The water was scarce. The athletes were mostly feeling okay but a lot of them had stomach issues. But it wouldn’t be the Global Olympics if all of those things weren’t happening at the same time as the track and field events!! Despite the conditions, our brave Olympians pushed forth and competed in the 100 m dash, the 1x300m relay, a throwing event and a long jump on the AUC track. Our illustrious judges (the Ripleys) earned honorary medals for scurrying around the field to pick up the rocks we were throwing (sometimes directly at them whoops) and marking down scores. Egypt took home quite a few golds, in what this reporter is chalking up to home-field advantage, but in my unbiased opinion Canada had the best sideline cheers.
After some debate, the Olympic Committee took mercy on the people and cancelled the frisbee portion of the competition, so we all dispersed for some much-needed free time and rest for the afternoon. At night, there was a showing in the Olympic Village of the critically acclaimed and critically angsty tv show Teen Wolf, which for some reason this group has really latched onto. The athletes are resting up, and are getting ready to hit the field tomorrow for some soccer!!! Stay tuned for more Olympic updates coming your way.
